Robert II

scene from Meet the Fockers

Another two highly rated comedy movies with Robert De Nero in a completely different style - from director Jay Roach. I just put them among my favorites. A nice to know is that Randy Newman did the music for "Meet the Parents".

Meet the Parents [2000]
Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is head over heels in love with his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo), and is ready to pop the big question. When his attempt to propose is thwarted by a phone call with the news that Pam's younger sister is getting married, Greg realizes that the key to Pam's hand in marriage lies with her formidable father, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro). A trip to New York for her sister's wedding seems just the right occasion for Greg to ask Pam to be his wife. But everything that could possibly go wrong, does. Upon his arrival at the family's picturesque, Norman Rockwell-like home, Greg is greeted by what appears to be the picture-perfect family; a loving husband and wife with a doting son and two daughters and a beloved cat. But for a guy who usually resorts to dry wit in stressful situations, Greg is suddenly shooting blanks with Jack, a retired horticulturist…and rather imposing figure. No one is good enough for Jack's first-born daughter, and the fact that Greg is a cat-hating male nurse with a vulgar-sounding last name is not helping things at all. While Greg bends over backwards to try and make a good impression, his weekend begins with lost luggage at the airport and turns into a hilarious series of one disaster after another.

Meet the Fockers [2004]
This looks like a first degree casting-crime; Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand. But they all do a topnotch performance. Following the knee-slapping hit Meet the Parents, director Jay Roach once again keeps audiences roaring with laughter as he presents Meet the Fockers. This time, young engaged couple Pam (Teri Polo) and Greg (Ben Stiller) are getting their parents together a few months before the wedding. Greg nervously plans out every detail of the trip, only to be usurped by Pam's domineering ex-CIA-man father (Robert De Niro). Not only has he purchased an RV, insisting they'll be driving from New York City to the Fockers' home in Miami, but he's bringing along his perfect baby grandson. When they finally arrive at the Fockers' house, Greg's parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand), turn out to be sex-addicted hippies and not at all what the Byrnes (DeNiro and Blythe Danner) had expected. With one pitfall after the next, the film takes the concept of awkward in-law experiences to new heights, leaving no stone unturned from stories about past sexual experiences to detailed discussion of current ones. What's worse, the Fockers are teaching the baby curse words weaning him on rum, to the shock of his overprotective grandparents. Every conversation is totally inappropriate and downright embarrassing, keeping audiences braced for the next disaster.

Robert

Talking to me?

There is a movie lover out there that posted a bunch of full movies with Robert De Nero. Really amazing. Here are just four legendary movies from the winning team - Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese;

Mean Streets [1973]
Martin Scorsese's electrifying drama tells the story of Charlie (Harvey Keitel), a charming 27-year-old who is supported by his devoutly Catholic mother. He spends his days wandering the streets of New York City and nights hanging out drinking with his good friend Johnny Boy (the terrifyingly brilliant Robert De Niro), a loose cannon that can't seem to escape trouble. Charlie's extreme affability makes him the middle man between his mob-tied uncle Giovanni (Cesare Danova) and various clients, as well as between Johnny Boy and Michael (Richard Romanus), a bookie who has become fed up with Johnny Boy's constant debt dodging. As the city's San Gennaro Festival takes over the streets of Little Italy, Michael seeks revenge on Johnny Boy once and for all. Mean Streets is the film in which Scorsese blossomed into one of the world's most ferociously distinct visionaries, a vision which has, for better or worse, become one of the most mimicked in the history of modern cinema. While his usage of a nostalgic pop music soundtrack, long one-takes and hand held cameras, and brutally realistic performances, spawned a generation of imitators, Mean Streets proves that while others may try to imitate, there is only one original. Mean Streets is a work of sheer cinematic bravado.

Taxi Driver [1976]
Martin Scorsese's intense film, a hallmark of 1970s film making, graphically depicts the tragic consequences of urban alienation when a New York City taxi driver goes on a murderous rampage against the pitiable denizens inhabiting the city's underbelly. For psychotic, pistol-packing Vietnam vet Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), New York City seems like a circle of hell. Driving his cab each night through the bleak Manhattan streets, Bickle observes with fanatical loathing the sleazy lowlifes who comprise most of his fares. By day he haunts the porno theaters of 42nd Street, taking his cues from the violent vision of life portrayed in these movies. As badly as Travis wants to connect with the people around him - including Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a lovely blond campaign worker, and Iris (Jodie Foster), a prepubescent prostitute he tries to save - his attempts are thwarted and his pent-up rage grows, turning him into a Mohawk-wearing walking time bomb. Scorsese fills Paul Schrader's screenplay with a tragic realism, brilliantly capturing the muck and grime of New York City. De Niro, playing the fragile hero, steps so deep inside his role that the results are deeply frightening. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score - which turned out to be his last - completes the urban nightmare.

Raging Bull [1980]
With Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese's personal approach to filmmaking is taken to a whole new level. Shooting in a crisp black and white, Scorsese tells the story of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta, played with incredible intensity by Oscar winner Robert De Niro. As La Motta rises through the ranks to earn his first shot at the middleweight crown, he falls in love with Vickie (Cathy Moriarty), a gorgeous girl from his Bronx neighborhood. Jake's inability to express his feelings pours out in the ring and eventually takes over his life in his dealings with his brother, Joey (a brilliant Joe Pesci). Irrational jealousy over Vickie, as well as an insatiable appetite, sends him into a downward spiral that costs him his title, his wife, and his relationship with Joey. As the out-of-control fighter, De Niro delivers one of the screen's most unforgettable performances. Pesci is just as intense as Joey, who finally realizes that he is unable to tame his animalistic brother. Cinematographer Michael Chapman shoots the film with a stylish flair that fills the boxing scenes with boundless energy and adds immediacy to the arguments that erupt whenever Jake is outside the ring. Simply put, Raging Bull is one of American cinema’s masterworks.

Goodfellas [1990]
Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WiseGuy, Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI’s witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family. Scorsese’s film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant popmusic soundtrack and stunning camera work - including the infamous Steadicam onetake that introduces the audience to the Copacabana’s patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a breathtaking, invigorating rhythm into every scene. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness, helping to cement Goodfellas' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.

Raymond van het Groenewoud [1949] is one of the best Flemish-Belgian singers/performers. He must have listened a lot to Jaques Brel [1929-1978]; also a super Belgian singer, but Jaques was French/Dutch bi-lingual. They both made some raunchy songs, but also some great ballads about Belgium.

sexy Joan Crawford in the 1930's

I just came around this movie; and it made me drip. "The Stolen Jools" is a short comedy film made in 1931. It features many appearances by the most famous film stars of the day. They appeared to help raise funds for the National Variety Artists tuberculosis sanitarium. This film is also known as "The Slippery Pearls".

If you enjoy, and know a bit about classic film of the 1930's, and if you appreciate many of those fine ladies and gentlemen that appeared on the screen at that time, you will likely be entertained by this short movie.

It's great fun to see actors and actresses from different studios working together; maybe that was the point of "The Stolen Jools". Many familiar faces and voices, and everyone somehow involved in this goofy mystery. A worthwhile twenty minutes of amusement.

Dorothea

Dorothea's Rache, Germany 1974 by Peter Fleischmann

It was Herman again that got me the links to this crazy good old weird movie. When you are in for a sexy surprise, you should take a look at this one - we promise you tears and laughter.
a movie critic wrote;
"Dorothea's Revenge begins with the characters talking directly to the camera and thus us, the viewers. But this is only one of the many, many pleasantly weird things you'll discover when watching this film.
Right at the beginning we learn that Dorothea - who introduces herself as a 17 yo. girl - has just made love to a Martian. And she even has a groovy, smoking meteorite to prove it. Her parents are concerned if the pill will work in the case of interstellar sex. The rest of the film follows Dorothea as she tries to learn more about love (both emotionally and physically) and ends up being abused again and again by an amazing parade of creeps and freaks before Jesus Christ himself pops up to give her some good advice.
Did I mention that this film is weird? The thing that cracked me up the most was Dorothea's father who runs a firm that produces "laughing bags". That's some kind of small mechanism that's in a metal box and is then put into a bag. When you shake the bag you are treated to hysterical laughter. Awesome, just awesome! If only contemporary German cinema were as fascinating as this 1972 film."

Caesar

Edward G. Robinson and George E. Stone in Little Caesar, 1931

Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico? With those words, Edward G. Robinson dies in a hail of bullets, a man who has fallen to the gutter from the hierarchy of the crime boss. This is the essential gangster film which set the standard for those that followed. The film is now 73 years old and still never fails to amaze you because of the performance by it's star. Robinson, a former player in the Yiddish theater, certainly wasn't physically attractive and his voice and mannerisms begged to be parodied. It was those very things that made him the premier gangster of the 30's and as his career matured he tempered his performances.
The story revolves around Rico and his compatriots as they move up in the world, some are left behind either by choice (as with Fairbanks) or they simply are "rubbed out" as Little Caesar climbs the crime corporate ladder. His downfall is rapid and extreme and his final home is a flophouse.
The supporting cast is strong and includes two of my personal favorites, the ubiquitous George E. Stone and the sassy Glenda Farrell.
It must be said that some of the performances are a bit overdone but we must remember that this was 1931 and sound was new to the movies. Actors had not quite adapted to the more restrained acting needed for film. Nevertheless, Little Caesar is the touchstone of the crime film. It merits repeated viewings.

As a former habitué of the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene, the singer Maria Muldaur has more of a right than most to be performing a Bob Dylan covers album. This set of well-chosen and imaginatively arranged versions, released in 2006, of some of Dylan's best love songs proves Muldaur's mastery of both sultry after-hours pieces like the swaying "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and the come-hither "Lay Baby Lay" (originally, of course,"Lay Lady Lay"), as well as Dylan's less literal expressions of romance, such as "The Golden Loom", an obscurity filled with interwoven religious, pagan, and sexual imagery.
