Queensday

Dutch National Hymn - here is the music

April, 30 is our national holiday. Queen Juliana's (1909 - 2004) birthday but her daughter Beatrix (1938) continued the tratiditon. Especially in Amsterdam it's always a great 48 hour orange mess; music, podiums, drunk and stoned people, garage-sales and the lot.

And then there was this terrible incident.

Doo

Dickey Doo and the Dont's were an all white group

I discovered Doo Wop about a year ago as a special style from the 1950's. It's soft R&B, close harmony, pre-Rock&Roll and the songs can be very romantic. Two tracks as an introduction;
- Little Fool - Ivory Tones
- Miracle Moment Of - Rudy West

Some Dutch guy posted a bunch of records (thank you Ruud);
- Doo Wob Extravaganza vol.1
- Doo Wob Extravaganza vol.2
- Doo Wop Dinner vol.1

one of Kinky Queen's 40+ Godzilla movie posters, looks like 1954

Weekend is ending. So here is a last great movie. Godzilla was invented in 1954 in Japan. There were a about 25+ Godzilla movies from the Japanese Toho studio. Here is a recent 2003 episode, no subtitles, Russian dubbed, American militaries and Japanese fighter pilots - all set for major mayhem.

You must use all your smart searches and than you can find this famous movie. It was on my radar some time ago but I never found the links.

I read about it in my newspaper last week, mentioning the special relationship between 15yo. Plato (Sal Mineo) and Jim Stark (James Dean) and how a movie can change your life. There is a shot in the movie where the camera catches Plato's socks; one red and one blue. From that day, I always wear a red and a blue sock ... ;)

Frontier

'My Name Is Yasmin'

A New French Extremity. The poster says it all. Frontiere(s) is a French horror film written and directed by Xavier Gens, also responsible for the computer game inspired film, Hit-man. The film begins in Paris with a group of criminals involved in a heist. As they are carrying out their robbery something goes wrong and it descends into chaos leading to the group splitting up and arranging to meet in a hostel out in the sticks. Unbeknown to the criminals the hostel owners are neo-Nazi degenerates with a hidden agenda, part of this agenda being the mutilation, torture and murder of their new guests.

Jamaica

This Is Ska, 1964

Jamaica is the origin of many great music. Calypso and Ska started there in the late 1950's and was followed by Rocksteady and Reggae.
- Calypso: Banana Boat song [1957] Harry Belafonte
- Ska: Jamaica Ska [1964] The Ska Kings
- Rocksteady: Africa (We Want To Go) [1966] The Gaylads
- Reggae: No Women, No Cry [1975] Bob Marley

This album is called 'Jamaice Before Ska'. It sounds like the early 1950's when Americans and English still occupied the Kingston Nightclubs.

Extreme

Martyrs, 2008

When you see a movie that looks special, you're probably not the first one. New French Extremity (or New French Extremism) is a term coined by Artforum critic James Quandt for a collection of transgressive films by French directors at the turn of the 21st century. The filmmakers are also discussed by Jonathan Romney of The Independent. Quandt describes the style as follows:

(Mario) Bava as much as (George) Bataille, Salo (Pasolini) and no less than de Sade seem the determinants of a cinema suddenly determined to break every taboo, to wade in rivers of viscera and spumes of sperm, to fill each frame with flesh, nubile or gnarled, and subject it to all manner of penetration, mutilation, and defilement.

Quandt associates François Ozon, Gaspar Noé, Catherine Breillat, Philippe Grandrieux, Bruno Dumont, Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day, Patrice Chereau's Intimacy, Philippe Grandrieux's La Vie nouvelle, Bertrand Bonello's The Pornographer, Marina de Van's In My Skin, Leos Carax's Pola X, Jean-Claude Brisseau's Secret Things, Jacques Nolot's La Chatte à deux têtes, Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi's Baise-moi, and Alexandre Aja's Haute tension with the label.

While Quandt intended the term as pejorative, many so labeled have produced critically acclaimed work. David Fear indicates that the lack of humanity beneath the horror represented in these film leads to their stigma, arguing that Bruno Dumont's Flanders "contains enough savage violence and sexual ugliness" to remain vulnerable to the New French Extremity tag, but "a soul also lurks underneath the shocks". Nick Wrigley indicates that Dumont was merely chastised for "letting everybody down" who expected him to be the heir to Robert Bresson. Jonathan Romney also associates the label with Olivier Assayas' Demonlover, Christophe Honoré's Ma mère, and C.S. Leigh's Process.

Some of the movies: À l'intérieur (2007), À Ma Soeur (2001), Baise-moi (2000), Calvaire (2004), Carne (1991), Choses Secrètes (2002), Dans Ma Peau (2002), Demonlover (2002), Flandres (2006), Frontière(s) (2007), Haute Tension (2003), Ils (2006), Intimacy (2001), Irreversible (2002), L'Humanite (1999), La Chatte à Deux Têtes (2002), La Vie Nouvelle (2002), Le Pornographe (2001), Les Amants Criminels (1999), Ma Mère (2004), Martyrs (2008), Pola X (1999), Process (2004), Regarde la Mer (1997), Romance (1999), Seul Contre Tous (1998), Sheitan (2006), Sitcom (1998), Sombre (1998), Sous Le Sable (2000), Trouble Every Day (2001), Twentynine Palms (2003), Vinyan (2008).

Martyrs (2008) just got out on DVD here and it got five out of five stars in my newspaper. Here is the scene (in 2x60MB. parts) where the woman is skinned alive. Indeed, pretty extreme.

Patty McCormack as Rhoda Penmark - The Bad Seed 1956

I couldn't resist blogging this 1956 B&W movie - The Bad Seed is a 2+ hours of super suspense. There is so many good/crazy stuff to find on the net. This is definitely a B-movie but it's a great one.

Bikini

Ever so sexy song from the 1960 charts about a bikini. Let's call her Brenda. The song is looping here for an hour or so. Sing along;

===

She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was as nervous as she could be
She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was afraid that somebody would see
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore

It was an itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today
An itsy, bitsy, teentie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
So in the locker she wanted to stay
Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more

She was afraid to come out in the open
And so a blanket around she wore
She was afraid to come out in the open
And so she sat bundled up on the shore
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore

It was an itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today
An itsy, bitsy, teentie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
So in the blanket she wanted to stay
Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more

Now she's afraid to come out of the water
And I wonder what she's gonna do
Now she's afraid to come out of the water
And the poor little girl's turning blue
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore

It was an itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today
An itsy, bitsy, teentie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
So in the water she wanted to stay
(From the locker to the blanket)
(From the blanket to the shore)
(From the shore to the water)
Yes, there isn't any more

the movie poster - and the trailer - says it all

Express

'Whatever you have here is unholy and must be destroyed'

Good old-fashioned horror fun from 1972 with Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas.

A critic wrote:
The story - about a body hopping alien loose aboard the Trans-Siberian railroad in 1906 - is like a dry run for all those X-Files to come. If you cross the X-Files with Murder on The Orient Express you come close what is on display here. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee - given a rare chance to play allies instead of enemies - rise to the occasion and deliver spot-on performances that are filled with an infectious wit and good humor. And the incomparable Telly Savalas - in what is really only a glorified cameo - makes the most of his opportunity, arrogantly strutting thru the train swilling vodka and chewing on the scenery with delight.
The director Eugenio Martín shows a real flair for developing an atmosphere of paranoia and fear and the screenplay is, quite simply, completely bonkers! The feverish pacing keeps everything hurtling forward with an hysterical abandon and a fine (if perhaps at the time, unwitting) comic edge.

Chow

Chow Yun Fat as a character in a computer game; very much Chow

Chow Yun Fat (or Yun Fat Chow) is a great movie actor from Hong Kong. He is about my age and I saw a lot of his movies. Chow made some 100+ movies by now, so when you see his name, it's always top quality Asian stuff. He very often plays in 'blam-blam' cobs & robbers movies. Chow is not always the good-guy, but you can always identify with his convincing performances.

Trailers

movie poster

Almost always, movie trailers (and movie posters) are all you need. The full movie can be disappointing. You can find many trailers on the tube. Robert Rodriguez' Machete trailer (Grindhouse) is iconic, because there never was a movie (yet).
- the Machete trailer from the tube.

There are many exceptions. Try to get a full John Woo movie. He is super-violent and super-intelligent, a great combination. Here is his "Just Heroes" trailer.

Some more great & crazy trailers;
- The King Kong vs. Godzilla trailer from 1962 in b&w.
- Sicky, Nazi, Sleazy Nicholas Cage as Fu-Manchu?
- Dead or Alive intro, actually the first 5 minutes of the movie.

So, the good news is, that movie-trailers are becoming an art on it's own without making the actual movie. And that is a good thing. As a producer you don't want to spend your money on this movie.

tiroler dirndl, 3rd hit

Carl must have played a joke on us. His famous Carmina Burana from 1937 [sounds like Latin] is actually a bunch of crappy semi-mad-evil, 'humping-in-the-hay', tong-in-cheek, tiroler-cleavage, near-porn scenes. It goes on and on until booze, drunk, Bacchus, Lucifer, sex, orgies, gang-rapes, and wo/man fights in the outdoors.
