I Muvrini, March 2008

OK, here we go, starting with the isle of Corsica (south of France).
I made about five holiday trips in my earlier years to this great island. There I was treated with some life sings at my med-beach-bar in Calvi. So great memories. And I have another story up my sleeve about the restaurant there way up the Calvi citadel.

I Muvrini is a world-famous band from Corsica. They play local and traditional music in their own Corsican language, acapella, voices only, polyphonics etc. all great stuff.

I Love Her

Lily Allen at the Solidays Festival - July 2007

She is yummy, she's from London and she didn't let me down - so far. This is her second album and that is always a creative hurdle for a 23 yo. (or any other artist). It's great poppy music again and funny lyrics. She got four out of five stars in my newspaper, marking her independent (indie) UK style and comparing her with Ian Dury & the Blockheads. Despite her media exposure she obviously found the time to make this album - the signs of a maturing pro.

Oh, in case you missed, I'm stoned in love with Lily ... LOL

The Fuck you very very very much song is about George Busch (a former USA president). The link to the album is from Italy (Thanks Italy).

Bob Dylan in an evening NFF concert

Bob was introduced for a broader audience by Joan Baez at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963. From then on his star got rising. This all black & white movie shows 'the making of' Bob Dylan in his NFF performances in 1963-1965, developing from a clumsy shy boy to a self-confident performer. This is a great 83:00 minute 'must have' music movie for all the the Dylanatics. It really made my eyes wet.

Buddy

Prototype of a 1950's Rock-and-Roll band; guitar (Fender Stratocaster), acoustic bass and drums. Bill Haley and his Comets were pretty much in the same setting.

A bit late, but it's always good to remember Buddy Holly (died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, the day that the music died). He was defining for the next generation Rock & Roll musicians. Don McLean made the American Pie song about Buddy's death.

Buddy Holly (and his Crickets) made many more great songs then his few famous hits. And he basically composed most of them himself. Here is a 2xCD Ultimate album with 50 great songs;

Club Med

This is a new project. I will post a Mediterranean music tour. I had already had some stuff on my HD and now I found some more. It is generally called 'world-music' and this strange music sometimes just grabs you right by the balls / tits. I try to restrict myself to the surroundings of the Mediterranean Sea to keep it a manageable project; and it includes some of my belly dance favorites ... ;-)

You have to Wiki, Google and find additional information for yourself, because it's all pretty exotic stuff (they are world famous in their village). Here are just a few songs to let you know what to expect;

[1] This is the 20MB./8:00min. live Gajda song from the Macedonian Kocani Orkestar. The hottest parts are in the end.
[2] This is the polyphonic song Fiaccule_Di_Speranza from the I Muvrini band from the isle of Corsica. I blogged them before but most links are dead.
[3] Belo Platno is from South Serbia and makes some great folk music. Here is their Gugu Tino song.

"Berlin" was not very well received in the USA in 1973. But by now it goes as one of Lou's masterpieces.

William of Orange & Nassau by Adriaen Thomasz Key, Mauritshuis, The Hague

William of Orange & Nassau (William the Silent) 1533-1584 is the founder of the Netherlands and the national hymn is all about him. I'm not sure what made us run, but we practiced 329 times the first and the sixth verse all night long. These two are usually played at official happenings.

The (one verse) music is from the Dutch Navy Band.
