Soul

Stax is a famous soul and R&B record label from Memphis that just celebrated their 50th anniversary. It had [and still has] a lot of famous artist and a lot of famous songs. It was founded in 1957 by white people Jim Stewart (the ST) and Estelle Axton (the AX). Stax relocated in the early 1970's from Memphis to Los Angeles. Here is a little tribute.

Stax style composing ... Isaac Hayes was composing for Sam & Dave when he found a nice riff on the piano. He yelled to David Porter (Dave) to come and find some text wih it. Dave was in the bathroom and Isaac kept yelling. Dave yelled back "Hold On, I'm Comin'".

Some other great songs from the Stax label;
- Booker T & the MG's - Green onions hot groove
- Eddie Floyd - Knock on wood
- William Bell - You don't miss your water
- The Staple Singers - I'll take you there
- Otis Redding - I've been loving you at Monterey, 1967
- The Emotions - Best of my love
- Johnnie Taylor - Who's making love
- Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft his breakthrough
- Carla Thomas - Gee whizz
- Angie Stone - Wish I din't miss you new kid on the block

Isaac Hayes ("hello children") did a lot of composing for Stax before his breakthrough in 1971 with the "Theme from Shaft". In 1969 he made his second studio album Hot Buttered Soul, now recognized as a landmark in soul music. The empeethree version is here [65MB./45:00min.]
