Don't get fooled by Tony, Chino, Riff or Bernardo. The movie is about Anita and Naria.

The other day I saw the West Side Story again. On widescreen in the EYE museum. Restored and digitized. The loud music was an extra spice to this event. Two-and-a-half hours of a top quality multi-media. A real treat. A must see.

The movie got 10 Oscars in 1962. The dances and the music are so great. Street-rap and immigrant topics. Still relevant in nowadays Holland and in the US of A. Did I mention Leonard Bernstein? Probably a legel immigrant. He is one of my favorites. He tried to explain Mahler to 12 yo. kids. No chance. So cute. There is nothing to explain. Lots to listen. LB made did the music for this movie. Classic, Jazz, Latin, a huge mix of great tunes.

The WSS is about the Jets and the Sharks. I guess you know the story. Testosterone driven street-gangs in New York. Even today a very hot topic. The WSS was [1] a musical on Broadway. Later [2] they made the movie. It's actually about the women. Don't get fooled by the men. This was sharp thinking. 10 Oscars. It's not about Riff and Bernardo. Even Tony and Chico are side-kicks. It's all about Anita and Maria. Girls have hormones too.

Anita (Rita Moreno, in purple dress, Puerto Rican, Shark-side) and Maria (Natalie Wood, in white dress, American, Jet-side) are the real heroins of this movie. In the end, they have a bond. Girls are in, boys are out. Riff, Bernardo, Tony and Chino all leave the movie prematurely and the girls survive.

Film Festival 2

Ciao. Here is my second little film-festival. It's about Spaghetti Westerns. It's a huge genre that started in the early 60's and going on for more than two decades. It probably had some roots in the 50's with the Zorro and the Zapata characters. With the links and some deep googling you can get a masters-degree in Spaghetti Westerns.

Here I focus on Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The relaese was postponed for the Newport "incident". That was a respectful gesture. I'm not going into that, simply because I have no words for this tragedy. In January the movie will be in the cinema's. The press already had a preview and the reviews are good.

The Django character (Franco Nero) was basically created, produced and directed by Sergio Corbucci in 1966.

Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone are probably the best known names for their Dollar Trilogy.

"I think [the Leone films] changed the style, the approach to Westerns [in Hollywood]. They made the violence and the shooting aspect a little more larger than life, and they had great music and new types of scores. They were stories that hadn't been used in other Westerns. They just had a look and a style that was a little different at the time: I don't think any of them was a classic story, like [John Wayne's 1956] The Searchers or something like that. Film Festival

I'm sure this 1958 movie is cult. The trailer of the original is hilarious.

I found three remakes;
- The 1993 remake is a feminist B-movie.
- The 1995 remake is an R-rated slap-stick.
- The 2012 remake is a mild sexy comedy.
Well, here you have my first mini film festival. Enjoy.

When I look back to the 1000+ posts on my blog, it's about movies, all kinds of music, modern and classic ballet, photography, and some sexy stuff. All the things that make me enjoy life. Mainly old-school. Later on maybe architecture, literature, poems, paintings, performances will kick in. And writing blogs is an intellectual joy.

I'm still deep into moving pictures. It's a frantic collector's kink. I now have almost 5000 movies on my hard-disks. Mainly art-house. I've seen a lot of them but not all. Discovering new insights every time I watch a movie.

Downloading movies is legal in the Netherlands. Uploading copyrighted material is not. But on Youtube you can find lots of full movies and in the future I could upload some more. That looks pretty safe. When they get a complaint, they remove the movie.

I fantasied about organizing a small film-festval. I was triggered by the Stanley Kubrick exhibition in the EYE film-museum earlier this year here in Amsterdam. It showed many props from his movies. Very exiting. You could see (but not touch) the cardboard bomb from Dr.Strangelove. That gave me the shivers.

Me organizing a film-festival is probably a bridge too far. There are lots of people involved. Not realistic. So, I will make my own little festivals here on this blog.

You must know that I like serious interviews, the-making-of and behind-the-scene footage. It makes you much more appreciate a movie, an actor or a director. A movie is a multiyear and multimillion project. Actors do months of research and physical preparation. You grow a deep respect for these people. A few examples;

• Jodie Foster in Taxidriver grew her pinky-nail to sniff coke. She researched that with real life prostitutes. A little detail but it gives you an impression how actors prepare themselves.
• The shooting of Raging Bull was suspended for a few months because Robert de Niro had to gain weight for the later parts of the movies.
• Hilary Swank trained every day for three months in the gym to gain some ten pounds of muscle-mass for her role in A Million Dollar Baby. Impressive efforts.
• Sofia Copolla at age 7 (daughter of Francis Ford) walked around on the sets of Apocalypse Now with a camera. It gave a unique behind-the-scenes documentary of this mega-project.

Be prepared. You can expect everything from cult to classic, from gore to great, from romcoms to sitcoms, from candy to cannibals, from sleaze to splatter, from WIP to war, from silly to serious, from early sci-fi to new Japanese sleaze and even lesbian movies from Vietnam.

I still must find some coherent themes to publish my 'mini-film festivals'. On average I like old 'lost-and-found' movies that are hard to come by. They are my little secrets that I will share with other movie freaks. I'm sure you can find all the recent block-busters - but that is not my cup of tea.

I don't know where to start. There's so much great footage around. It's hard to stay focused. I start with 'the other side of' Bruce Willis. Here is a 35 min. interview in 2001 for The Actors Studio Drama School. That's a masters for actors, writers and directors. You will hear some more of it in future blogs. What you can notice in this interview is, that Bruce Willis is actually a very shy person - a sharp contrast with his hard-boiled characters he played. Revealing interview. In The Sixth Sense Bruce is a stranded child-psychologist who engages in a last challenge. It's a convincing and sensitive performance and a very entertaining movie.

I blogged this 'manual' before. Quentin Tarantino (from California) and Robert Rodriguez (from Texas) will give you some more tips about B-movies and double-bills. They talk an hour long about their Grind-house, Death-Proof and Planet-Terror project. It gives you so much insight in rural and big-city American movie culture. I loved it.

Back to the manual. Before you decide to download the 'Faster Pussycat' movie you should check;

• A. the poster
• B. the imdb-entry
• C. the trailer

The inviting poster, the exciting trailer and the boring movie are made by completely different people. There can be a huge mismatch. Be warned. But I guarantee you, this movie is a great cult hit. A few years ago there were rumors that Quentin Tarantino planned a remake of 'Pussycat' with Britney Spears. Well, these type of projects take some years. Let's wait and see.

Sometimes a trailer can be a piece of art on its own. But now I'm repeating myself. I mentioned this in earlier blogs. Some extreme 'New Japanese' examples that I like very much. Warning. Not for the weak-of-heart. It's over-the-top violence with chopped limbs and splitted heads and fountains of blood. Take care.

• The Machine Girl was definitely an inspiration for Robert Rodriguez' Planet Terror. The trailer and the movie.
• The opening scene of Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive I is a piece of great editing.
• There is a TMO (the making of) around that shows the hilarious fun these Japanese people had in making Tokyo Gore Police. The trailer and the movie.
• Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer is definitely cult. One of the first hyper-violent new-Japanese movies. The trailer and the movie.

Cees

The 'Blauw-Bil-Gorgel' still is a famous poem in Dutch literature. If I had to translate that, it would be 'Blue-Butt-Gorgeous'. It's an experimental format from Cees Buddingh. He was once declared as the most boring Dutch poet by our 'elite' witers. Especially by hot-tempered Willem Frederik Hermans. Cees is super-cool. He's a favorite of mine. Just like Simon Carmiggelt and Godfried Bomans. Cees was from the city of Dordrecht. The last place where you want to live in the Netherlands.

There is a Goeman-Borgesius-Plantsoen in Dordrecht. How do I know that. Because I had a friend on my primary school. I forgot his name. We were both bullied. We had a connection. He relocated to Dordrecht. I got his adress. I never saw him again.

Johnny

Johnny van Doorn (aka Johnny the Selfkicker) was a poet-performer in the late 1960's. His 'Sun' poem is still underestimated.

Strad

In this blog, a Strad is as much a legend as a Fender Stratocaster. You can search my blog for 'Fender' or 'Zappa' to read the Jimi Hendrix stratocaster story.

Girls, girls, gils. Musical girls. No Rihanna, Madonna, Gaga or Beyoncé. My girls are of the classical type. No misunderstanding; every poppy girl went through thousands of hours of practice ands devotion. Respect for every body.

Why does a Stradimarius or a Giardini violin sound so great? They tried to replicate it many times. Nobody ever succeeded. It was not the lacker. The story goes, that around the 1700's there was a mini ice-age. Trees grew slower then. Especially on the north side of the Italian Alps. That's where the wood came from. I like this lovely 'broodje aap' story.

I'm not sure if it was French philosopher Pierre Bourdieu who stated that reality is all imagination and imagination is all reality. A deep thought, but not very practical.

Beethoven

So beautiful. The triple concert from Ludwig van Beethoven. Not played anymore nowadays, because of the awkward casting. I have a vinyl version somewhere. How do you get three world-toppers together. This is a pretty unique full concert movie
- Yo Yo Ma (cello)
- Itzhak Perlman (violin)
- Daniel Barenboim (piano, director)

He is my role model. I'm a fan of Ludwig van Beethoven. He was German. Same age as Georg Wilhelm Friedriech Hegel. Also a semi-genius. A super-great German philosopher, but completely incomprehensible. Hegel gave me a good gut-feeling for the rest of my life. Deep thoughts and great overview. I even suspect Beethoven's 9th symphony was an ode to Hegel's 'Phänomenologie des Geistes'. Nonsence, it was the German Zeitgeist.

I'ts a real difference between van Beethoven and von Beethoven. The "von" depicts (in German) that he was from noble descent. He was definitely not. Young Beethoven was a fan of Napoleon. His 'Eroica' was dedicated to him. Later on he became disappointed with in Napoleon.

There's a movie around in the cloud ('Copying Beethoven') about a young girl that's copying his scribbles for a decent publication. Grumpy, lively, deaf, old man. That's the way I want to see Ludwig (I'm terminal romantic). In this scene she is conducting the conductor on his first performance of his last symphony. Mind you, he was stone-deaf at that time. So lovely.

Totally flabbergasted when I first heard this music. Not sure how it became The European Anthem.

Julia

Julia Fischer.

No, this is no accident, all pictures are black-and-white in tone. That's the hallmark of this blog.

As a contrast with my previous blog, I want to introduce Julia Fisher. She is a great looking super-multi-talented woman, who plays the piano and the violin as wel with big orchestras. Here she's playing a piano-concerto of Grieg.

She also can pretty good play the violin. Multi-talented woman. Click here to see her play the Mendelssohn violin concerto.

I stated before on this blog, that classical music can be very sexy. I even suspect agents and producers to promote sexy women like Janine Jansen. She is a Dutch fiddler with raving critics, especially in the UK.

Now, that was typical Dutch. To downplay our greatest assets. The RCO (Royal Concertbuilding Orchestra) was once pronounced as The Best Orchestra In The Whole Wide World, even before the Wiener and Berliner crews. That's something to be proud of. But it got little attention here in the Netherlands. They have a long Mahler tradition with directors like van Beinum, Bernard Haitink, Ricardo Chally, and now Mariss Jansons.

Mariss can even make the Wiener sound great. He is a modest genius. That's what we like here in the Netherlands. No pompous Karajans or Haitink ego's. Brilliant Italian Ricardo Chailly did some great work with the RCO but he was definitely a cultural mismatch. I think Leonard Bernstein (RIP) would be a great director for the RCO. He also was a composer (West Side Story). As a director he was more pronounced than Mariss. I was just blown right out of my pants, when I saw Leonard Bernstein explaining Gustav Mahler to an audience of 12 yo kids.

I just got my ticket for the Concertgebouw. December 19th. Balcony, best seat, 125,= Euro. Concert of the RCO with Mariss Jansons. Third symphony of Mendelssohn. Best combination in the whole wide world.
"Remember, to shave your armpits and dress classy for this event, and don't forget some clean underwear".

The last time I visited the Concert Building was with my highschool class. About 40 years ago. They played an Opera from Mozart. I couldn't understand a word of it, but it was very impressive. Some daring highschool teachers still have a warm place in my hart.

Drifting away agian. Back to Julia. In these clips she plays the piano with The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, (Young German Philharmonic), conductor is Matthias Pintscher. Enjoy.

Romance

Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in "True Romance".

The motion picture "True Romance" from 1993 is so lovely, in many respects. I will not discuss here every movie that hits me. This is one of those exceptions. With no special reason. That's to say that every motion picture has special reasons to enjoy. My special reasons are the background stories. There are a lot of TMO (The Making Of) clips around. Just like a good description with a painting in a museum, it makes you so much more appreciate the work that has gone into it.

I viewed this movie (again) after seeing an interview with Chistopher Walken and and James Gandolfini (The Soprano's). Both play a role in the movie. Just two episodes of a huge 200+ episode series on Youtube from "Inside The Actors School". Every interview is at least 40 minutes and goes in-depth about acting skills and movies. A real paradise for movie lovers.

New to me was that Quentin Tarantino wrote the script. That must not come as a surprise. The almost (un)believable hyper-violence is a hallmark of Quentin. The story is not simple but very entertaining. Bad-Boy and Bad-Girl fall in love and get stuck with a suitcase of cocaine. Dreaming of a better life, they have to struggle their way out of the mob. Strong woman role from Patricia Arquette. In the beginning she is a call-girl gift for his birthday. Later in the movie she becomes my heroin. Quentin Tarantino did the same theme again with Pam Grier in Jackie Brown (1997). One of Quentin's best movies.

Gary Oldman is her pimp in "True Romance". He did the same creepy performance in "Léon, Le Professional", a movie from Luc Besson where 12yo Natalie Portman is trained by Jean Reno to be a professional killer. Amazing movie.

Dennis Hopper and Patricia Arquette are the real reasons for this blog. He is my rebel icon and Patricia is so lovely. Great casting. The Sicilian dialogue between Christopher Waren and Dennis Hopper is a little diamond in film history. Quentin Tarantino loves to write dialogues, but this looks like a great improvisation to me. Listen to the music. Not sure if Quentin (again) had a hand in the casting and the music. Elvis Presley and a purple Cadillac are all around. When things get romantic, the theme song is played. Such a lovely theme that very well contrasts to the hyper violence. I suspect a hand from Quentin.

Every super movie star is OK. Great people. It's a very serious profession. They work hard for it and they deserve their millions and their paparazzi. Patricia Arquette (I love her) is in the role of Alabama. She has such a sexy southern accent. She probably had a language-coach for this role. Don't be mistaken. Actors do weeks or months of preparation. That reminds me of the movie and the song "Sweet Home Alabama".

At a close look you can notice some small details in "True Romance". When a TV is playing, there is a gangster scene with Yun-Fat Chow from a John Woo movie. Quentin Tarantino is a fan of John Woo. Hyper-Violence. The same goes for Hostel 2 from Eli Roth. When the girls arrive in the hostel, the TV plays a scene from "Pulp Fiction". The movie "Killing Zoe" was produced by Quinten Tarantino. Same great story telling and again hyper-violence. There's a three second cameo of Ron Jeremy. A nice to know.

There is a clan of friend-directors. John Woo is from Hong Kong. Robert Rodiguez is from Mexico. Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino are from the USA. Takashi Miike is from Japan. They share a love for artistic hyper-violence. The first six minutes of Takashi Miike's "Dead or Alive" are amazing.

They all directors just pay tributes to each other. It's a small village. I like the criss-cross references. That gives me more depth in understanding movies. So far so good for the movies. You can click on the links on the right for more movie links. See you later.

I've not been very active lately on my blog. Sometime it looks like I'm just pumping movie-bytes all around the interweb. Probably I have some better things to do. So here is a better idea for all of us.

[3] Then decide to download the whole movie.
You (very often) can find the full movie in .rar format on RS or MU with this great search engine. You must visit the originating site to check if a password is required.

That's how I found this great Russ Meyer cult classic. The movie is ~90+ min. in about 10 x 120 MB. parts. PSW = None.

Pussycat is another great [1965] culty from Russ Meyer. All movie links are still hot. There were some rumors around that Quentin Tarantino wants to do a remake with Britney Spears (she declined). Now that Pablo Rodriguez got Jessica Alba out of her clothes (Machete 2010), I am not surprised by anything anymore. I'm sure you can find the cam's on the interweb when the time is there (yawn).

Cigarettes

Another [1984] movie. It's situated around the cigarette factory in Seville (Spain) in the 19th century. It's all about love, passion, jealousy, bull-fights, a frivolous gypsy girl (Carmen), a handsome corporal (Don Jose) and a not so happy ending.

My father introduced me to this Carmen opera (thanks Pa) and it made a firm impression on me since - for its story, its catchy songs and its sexy undertones.

Georges Bizet was a French music composer from Paris in the Romatic style. So, here is his best story and greatest (last) opera. Not sure if he was ever into Andalusian territory, but he did his research; I've been in Seville and saw the factory with my own eyes. It's a great building and its still there, but it has other usages today. The opera is so great.

'La Plaza de Toros de Ronda' (~100 miles SE of Seville) is THE bull-fight-temple in southern Spain. The BF scenes in this movie are from there and they are awesome. I've never seen any 'arty' bull-fight scenes in any movie; here is your chance.

Not for the faint-of-heart. When the toreador conquered the bull, he cut of his balls as a trophy. Ernest Hemingway was a bull-fight-fan. He is one of my heroes, maybe a substitute father (sorry Pa). Spinning around again. I did a holiday tour in southern Spain and I kinda fell in love with this region.

Take a look at this Ronda bull-fight movie . There are A- and B- category Toreadors; same as in Football / Soccer. This B-clip is very instructive for beginners. The Toreador is the star of the show. Some Picadors pinch the bull with some nasty spears to make him jumpy (always a HIM). The final scene is, that the Toreador will stab the bull with his sable between the shoulder-blades down through his heart. The bull then goes down, and he can take his balls. Finally the bull-corpse is dragged away by two horses.

George Bizet(1838–1875)did his Carmen opera a year before he died. Bizet now lies on the celeb-only cemetery Père Lachaise in Paris. I've been there too and it was an existentialist experience.

The 'Gulf-stream Waters' made me post this one. Because it is such a mess over there, even I (Urp) am worried. Besides that (as a runner-up for the 4th of July) this is the best ever PR song for the USA. American children should sing this song every morning in primary schools. I even don't mind if this will become the USA National Hymn (oh, what silly thoughts again);

Honda

Japanese director Ishiro Honda is The Godfather of many Godzilla movies. The series started in 1954 and is still running. There was a 50th anniversary movie in 2004. You can find some Godzilla entries on my blog. Instead of posting another episode, I will post some (re/search) links for you that are interested.

The legend originates from the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This triggered a gene-mutant-monster called Godzilla
and some more of his angry friends.

This is a nice-to-know background story to appreciate these flicks. It's probably a kind of way for Japan to cope with these defining national events (...).

Production quality from the Tokyo Toho studios is comparable with Hollywood; high. And the movies are always very entertaining.

The Godzilla movies are under-estimated and kind of hidden-cult in the west and that is a shame. They are on the same level as (say) the Hollywood 'Batman' or 'Spiderman' series; though most of these Godzilla movies were from the 1950's and 1960's.

I am a fan of Honda's Godzilla.
