Sleep

A picture that doesn't need many words. Katherine is sleeping her last night with husband Jim [just died in Iraq] and playing some favorite .mp3's on their laptop.

Ymre

Ymre Stiekema - Dutch Super Model

When you google for 'Dutch Super Models' you get almost 700,000 hits. Dutch models are a niche market of great [neutral/natural] looking and easy-to-handle girls with non-star-ambitions. The story of provincial [Friesland] girl Doutzen Kroes is already splattered around the web.

Ymre Stiekema is a new 16-yo. provincial junior highschool student [Groningen]. She is the new model for the Prada Red Line. Her school mates are discussing her/succes. I guess Ymre needs some anti-bitch-coaching ... ;)

[Suus] ze zit bij me op school en is echt een arrogante bitch
[Lis] ik ben het met Suus eens, ze is inderdaad een arrogante bitch,
zit ook bij haar op school, dus Suus en ik kunnen het weten!)
[Liz] He Suus, beetje jaloers? Ben ff een beetje blij voor d'r joh! Ymre you go girl!

Gabriella

Gabriella Cilmi

Gabriella Cilmi is a 16 yo. singer/songwriter from Italian descent, born in Australia and now living in London. And there are a lot of hot music chicks in London today [Lilly, M.I.A., Duffy, Amy] where this type of culture is growing.

She hit my radar a few months ago for her good looks and her great songs. Gabriella sounds pretty 'normal' in her interviews; but that will probably change in a few months when the Paparazzi get hold of her.

On her first album she still is searching for her own sound. She got some mixed impact from Nina Simone, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and The Sweet. But that's OK when you're a 16 yo. start-up.

Go-Go-Gabriella!

Beijing

Maartje Paumen in action

It seems that the Dutch athletes at the Olympics are not performing up to expectations. Probably it's an expectation problem. But we do have some of the most sexiest athletes around.

Sports has nothing to do with politics [so they say] but it has everything to do with sex [that's what I say].

There was this nice story a few weeks ago in my paper about a previous Olympic (Sydney?) where they had 50,000 free condoms for the athletes and they had to supply for another 20,000 more. "It was almost embarrasing to see those girls grabbing hands-full-of".

At least our hockey chicks are through to the semi's. They probably all need a violent vibrant vuck to go for the vinals. Here's just some hot stuff from Ashlee Simpson to get our girls running.

50

Prince in concert

It was not so difficult to predict all the media attention around Madonna's birthday (today). More interesting was an article in my paper that mentioned Prince and Michael Jackson - who also celebrated their 50th birthday this summer. These were the three Megastars of the Eighties, surfing on the waves of the new MTV era.

I'm sure you can Google & Wiki all the details about this important episode in pop history.

Here are just some iconic tracks;
- Thriller (Michael Jackson, 1982) 90+ weeks in the top charts
- Like A Vigin (Madonna, 1984) 50+ weeks in the top charts
- Purple Rain (Prince, 1984) 30+ weeks in the top charts

Space

Astronaut Robert L. Stewart - photo by NASA

There ar a few legendary movies where real people are not playing the major roles. I can't even remember the main characters. Vanishing Point (driver = Kowalski) was one of those movies with the 1971 Dodge Challenger RT - and that popped up again in Tarantino's Death Proof.

The HAL 9000 computer (voice = Douglas Rain) is the main character in this great 40yo. movie - (director = Stanley Kubrick)

Please remind me that I have to blog some more movies of Stanley Kubrick.

When the world is ruled by apes, one particular group discovers a mysterious rectangular monolith near their home, which imparts upon them the knowledge of tool use, and enables them to evolve into men. In the year 2001, a similar monolith is discovered on the moon, and is determined to have come from an area near Jupiter. Astronaut David Bowman, along with four companions, sets off for Jupiter on a spaceship controlled by HAL 9000, a revolutionary computer system that is every bit mankind's equal, and perhaps his superior. When HAL endangers the crew's lives for the sake of the mission, Bowman will have to first overcome the computer, then travel to the birthplace of the monolith, where whatever alien intelligence controls them decides that humanity is ready to take the next evolutionary step.

The movie comes in about 7x100MB. parts

Han

Han Bennink in a solo for the ICP reunion in 2003 - photo by Paul van Riel

Han Bennink (drums), Willem Breuker (wood & sax) and Misha Mengelberg (piano) were among the world famous free & avant-garde jazz artists in the Netherlands in the 1970's and 1980's. They founded and played together in the [1967-1973] Instant Composers Pool (ICP). I was very lucky to witness some of their live performances.

There are a lot of nice tubes with Han Bennink. Here are some clips from the Sting JazzKlubb.

And recently I found a complete 3-track album of Han; and that is pretty rare for his type of music. This is again top-notch Dutch culty culture. All credits go to the original uploader.

Prima

Louis Prima, an early picture

I'm almost sure that I blogged Louis Prima before but I can't find him anymore. Whenever I stumble upon this guy, bells go off and he makes me bounce around the room. This is so great music for a weekend party.

Here is a homemade 32 track mix in about 2x65MB. parts. The sample song is Oh Marie. The setlist is in .jpg format.

Tielman

The Atomium in Brussels

I'm not sure where to locate the start of Dutch pop music. But there is this great story about the Tielman Brothers who were invited to play at the Dutch pavilion on the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958. Everybody was expecting the Aloha Hawaian sounds from our Indonesian friends. So the shock was complete when they played some Elvis Presley type of rock. The Dutch government even made their official excuses.

I was triggered by this top quality 5xCD set of Dutch pop history [1963-1969]; the Bluf Beat and Branie box. Probably not for everybody around the world but a definite must-have for lovers of Dutch nostalgia.

All credits go to the original poster.

Hamp

The Hamp in concert

A few months ago I read an eye-witness story of the Lionel Hampton concert in the Amsterdam Concert Building in the mid 1950's. It was a great story and it must have been absolute mayhem where girls were barefoot trampling the empty beerbottles.

Mind you - this was 'state-of-the-art' niggah-music is those days (jazz) and probably an early warning for the wild 1960's that were to come. This track gives you a slight impression what must have happend.

Lionel [1908-2002] started his career in the 1920's on drums and he played with a lot of famous jazz performers. But when he switched to vibraphone and got his own band, his career and reputation really went ballistic.

And then this Bluesman poster came around with some great albums (many thanks Bluesman).
Here is a top quality recording from 1956. Pretty cool and easy jazz.
- the first track (18MB.)

Faster

Tura Satana (right) as Varla

Is it a coincidence or is it focused attention. First there was this strange item in the news that Quentin Tarantino is planning a remake of this Russ Meyer cult classis from 1965 casting Britney Spears in the Varla part (but she refused). And then I found out that the original movie is in black-and-white. And that again snuggs-in nicely with my previous blog.

The movie is about three thrill seeking lesbian strippers that encounter a young couple in the desert. After killing the boyfriend, they take the girl hostage and begin scheming on a crippled old man living with his two sons in the desert, reputedly hiding a tidy sum of cash. They become houseguests of the old man and try and seduce the sons in an attempt to locate the money, not realizing that the old man has a few sinister intentions of his own.

It is already in the first few minutes that you are overwhelmed by strippers, horny guys, fancy sportscars, great landscapes, nice music and some strange Mexican accent from one of the girls. This classic is really a must-have for cult-lovers.

Here is the original flick from 1965 in about 7x100MB. parts

Photo

Dennis Hopper as the crazy photojournalist in Apocalypse Now [1979]

You must have noticed that I like black-and-white photograpy. It can give you a more 'arty' look and feel. I still have some Nikon F3 bodies and a great set of lenses but I stopped using them long ago. It is easy to pick up again when you know the basics of contrast.

It was Ansel Adams [1902-1984] who wrote some defining books about black-and-white photography.

This blog was triggerd by an article I stumbled upon that shows the utter complexity of modern colour photography in the photoshop era. I tried this software a few years ago and I almost went postal.

Mick

Bill and Mick get connected - but not before camera

Music and sex is a pretty natural combination. You can even argue that music is sex (in many respects). I was triggerd to make this blog because Mick Jagger just turned 65 last week and it wasn't noticed by many media. This is just a small tribute to one of my super heroes.
