Gerard

All credits go to Wim Hoogendijk for providing this picture

(Sorry, all Dutch, no subs). Gerard Reve (turned into a Catholic freak) was one of, maybe THE best Dutch writer/artist from our recent history. He did not had a factory but you can easily compare him with a Dutch kinda Andy Warhol or a Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Jan 'Turkish Delight' Wolkers (turned into a bio-freak) and Paul 'Robocop' Verhoeven (turned into a jezus-freak) are the other rascals of Modern Dutch Culture. I will blog some more Dutch freaks.

Gerard was a good-looking explicit and tormented homosexual. He threw it all out in his art and literature. Gerard was a radical rascal who compared Jezus with a Donkey. He went Catholic (for all to know) maybe to fuck his elder communist brother. I think it helped him. Gerard still has a full flock of fans and followers over here.

He also knew the power of the media. In 1974 Gerard did a TV show that is still a Unique Piece of Dutch Cultural History. Rob Houwer was the producer and his name flops op in many places (thank you Rob).

Some people don't only MAKE art, they ARE art.

Enjoy Gerard's Dutch language and his crazy quotes;
De Grote Gerard Reve Show (1974) part 1/5
De Grote Gerard Reve Show (1974) part 2/5
De Grote Gerard Reve Show (1974) part 3/5
De Grote Gerard Reve Show (1974) part 4/5
De Grote Gerard Reve Show (1974) part 5/5

Look for part 4 and 5 where Gerard (Teddybear) has a discussion with Jezus (Donkey). This is iconic footage from Dutch TV.

My e-pal was so kind to point out that Gerard and Karel were (both) famous brothers over here. But they hated each other. Karel was an anti-Freudian super-communist psycho professor (he died from Alzheimer) and had low rewards for Gerard.

Kopspijkers was a Dutch (2001) TV show with lots of hard and black humor that depicted both Gerard Reve and Rudi Carell (two Dutch icons) very well in the same scene. I could make a zillions references to Crazy Dutch Cult, but I think this is enough for today.

Geniet (Enjoy)
