Old

Winnetou (Pierre Brice) and Old Shatterhand (Lex Barker)

I have seen some movies from Winnetou and Old Shatterhand in my early teens in my local cinema. It just so happened that I discussed it a few weeks ago with some friends. The stories are from late 19th century German writer Karl May [1842-1912] who never set a foot on American soil. This is great educational stuff for your sons about bonding and friendship between Cowboys and Indians. No, it's not gay but I will not object if you have a different opinion.

Don't expect much of the movies. A lot of fighting, shooting, actors with whigs and Indians asking for 'fire-water'. But it has great locations and a definite nostalgic charm. There is a decent (German spoken) trailer on the tube from the 1963 movie 'Winnetou part 1'.

Pow! Pow! You're Dead! - that was the game we played as 12yo. kids after seeing this movie. These Karl May books and movies made a firm [biased] impression of the 'noble Indian' so it wasn't too bad to be an Indian but the Cowboys always were in favor.

Winnetou in The Vally of the Dead is a (one of many) German Yugoslav coproductions from 1968 from Austrian director Harald Reinl.

The movie is German spoken and has no subtitles. The movie is beautifuly made as always with great locations and is very entertaining. It is about 85:00min. and comes in 14x100MB. files
