Ludwig van Beethoven [1770-1823] composed this "Holy Mass" [op.123] in his latest years when he was stone-deaf. He himself - and many others - consider this as one of his greatest pieces. It was first performed in 1824, the year after he died. There is some good wiki information about this piece of music.
